Dirk-Karsten Schleitzer commenced his path towards intellectual property during his vocational training for medical technical laboratory assistants, continued by a Master degree in mechanical engineering with a specific focus on process engineering awarded by the University of Bochum, after which he worked as a project engineer and scientific assistant at the Fraunhofer-Institute UMSICHT for environmental, safety and energy technology in Oberhausen. In this context, he prepared a doctoral thesis at the University of Dortmund on the exploration of biogenic gases in fuel cells. He was awarded a Ph.D. in engineering in 2003.

Dirk-Karsten Schleitzer was then educated as a patent attorney at the firm of Gesthuysen, von Rohr & Eggert in Essen, while at the same time studying Law for Patent Attorneys at the University of Hagen. Having completed internships at the Higher Regional Court of Dusseldorf, the German Patent and Trademark Office as well as the Federal Patent Court, he was admitted as a patent attorney in 2004 after passing his examination in the same year. Still in 2004 he became a partner of Gesthuysen, von Rohr & Eggert and left the firm in 2012 in order to become one of the founding partners of VON ROHR Patent Attorneys.

Dirk-Karsten Schleitzer consults highly innovative national and international companies in all aspects of intellectual property. In the context of his activities as a patent attorney, he is specialized in trademark and patent litigations. As a member of the managing committee of the entrepreneurs' association innoexperience, Dirk-Karsten Schleitzer is involved in regional networks for the enhancement of innovation processes, in particular in medium-sized companies seated in North-Rhine Westphalia.
